Sculpture Continuum - John F. Heric
Artist: John F. Heric - (1942 - 2011) For 34 years he taught undergraduates at the University of Arizona
Location: 6700 North Oracle Road
Completed: 1986
Collection: Private
Medium: Continuum: corten steel; Black Pools: black and white granite, exposed aggregate, water and plants The pools were not operational when I visited, but the courtyard area was beautiful. I'm sure at one time they would have been magnificent.
Dimensions: Continuum: 30′ x 46′; North pool: 60″ high x 22′ diameter; South pool: 62″ high x 24′ diameter.
Artist Statement copied from Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona:
The sculpture deals with the mystery of civilization as it is embodied in the mute structures of past eras. Architectural components may be tied to history but may in fact be mute and reveal nothing. Thus, they relate to the mysterious in history, and thence to the mysterious in our own time. The architectural elements that are used are not specific but universal. The human mystery to which they allude is also universal.
Description:
There are three pieces on the site, united in theme. Each uses the pyramid as the major element. In front of the building is Continuum (Exploring the Pyramid). Within the courtyard are two fountains. The one to the north is Black Pool Number One; to the south is Black Pool Number Two. All three pieces were commisioned by the Bohm Company.
