White-lined Sphinx moth - caterpillar

I came across this beautiful colorful caterpillar on my morning walk this week. It was pretty good-sized for a caterpillar so I assumed it would turn into something fairly large. It turns out I was right. It's a White-lined Sphinx moth--also sometimes called a Hummingbird moth. If you've ever seen one flitting from flower to flower, it's easy to see how they get their nickname.

I saw this caterpillar in the yard about a week later. It's also being ID'd as the same type of caterpillar. Hmmmm. Did one get ID'd incorrectly? Or are there variations?
